Fascinantul oras Kyoto - In discutie in 13 octombrie

On Saturday, October 13th, Japan’s Friends Club restarted its usual cultural meetings, this time deciding to talk about a topic too vast to cover completely in a single meeting. The topic was the city of Kyoto, called Heian-kyo (the Capital of peace and Tranquility) when it was named Capital in 794, remaining the imperial Capital of Japan for almost 1100 years, and still remaining the cultural capital of Japan, to this day. Since the city is way too rich in culture for the allocated time in our meeting, we couldn’t but only talk superficially about what lies behind many of the cultural aspects and and objectives that had been brought to question. Therefore, this time our attempt this time was more than getting behind a single aspect of the city, to open to the participants as many ways to discovering this city as possible.
The meeting started with the usual introduction of the participants, who had various interests regarding Japan, from Japanese anime to literature, painting, the Japanese language and others. After this introductory moment, Mr. Radu Nedisan started his presentation about Kyoto.
We found out various interesting things from the presentation, the public showing interest for the presented elements and impressed by the new information, the majority of which had been unknown to that point. Among the interesting facts that we found out there is the fact that Kyoto was about to be destroyed during the Second World War, when it was threatened by nuclear attack. The attack didn’t take place in the end, thanks to the Secretary of War in the USA at that time, who had been to Kyoto in his honeymoon and wanted to save the city.
Kyoto is a bueautiful city, located inside the main island of Japan, Honshu, and it has no connection to the sea. It is, however, surrounded by 1000 meter, forest covered mountains from three sides. The city is beautifully integrated in the surrounding nature, its core buildings being arranged by Fenf Shui principles, some of the main natural attractions being sakura blossoms, momiji leaves in autumn and the bamboo forest. Besides these, there is a great number of buddhist temples and shinto pagodas which can be visited, the most renouned being Kiyomizu-dera (The Temple of Pure Water), Kinkakuji (The Golden Pavilion), Heian-jingu, Fushimi-inari, the stone garden of Ryouanji temple (The Temple of the Dragon at Peace). Other attractions that have been presented are the Nijo Castle and the Katsura Imperial Villa, renouned for its surrounding gardens.
Kyoto is not only renouned for its temples and pagodas. It is also a city full of festivals, with three major festivals, two of which taking place in Kyoto for more than 1000 years. The three major festivals are Aoi Matsuri, Gion Matsuri and Jidai Matsuri, the most important being Gion Matsuri, with its main attraction being the parade that takes place on the street, consisting of 12 ton floats, pulled by people.
Gion is not only the name of the greatest festival in Kyoto, but also the name of the most renouned and exclusivist neighborhood in Kyoto, renouned for the Geishas who still preserve their tradition. The Geishas in Gion are called Geiko - children of the art.
At the end of the presentation we watched a short documentary about Kyoto, from the perspective of sound. The documentary focused on the craftsmen who live and work in the city, helping to preserve the art they inherited from their families from ages.
For all these craftsmen, the sound and rhythm which their tools produced were very important for the brilliance of their work. We attempted to touch the public in this respect, encouraging them to make things with their hands, things which have much more value than what you can buy in a store, giving them as an example Kyoto, a city of 1.5 milion people, where you can find so many craftsmen still working on a daily basis as their families used to for centuries.
After Radu’s presentation, Ms. Minodora B. presented a little of her own experience in Kyoto, encouraging us that, if we ever go to Kyoto, to take a local guide who can tell us more profound things about each thing and place that we would visit. Ms. Minodora’s experience was a beautiful one, even though in that period there was no significant festival taking place, and since it was rainy, the experience of seeing a geisha in person, visiting Gion, remained but a desire. Ms. Minodora also suggested to the people who want to learn more about Kyoto, and will not have the chance to visit it soon, to read a book called “The Old Imperial City”, by famos writer Yasunari Kawabata.
Before the end of the meeting, Mr. Katsutaro Kawai sent an invitation to the Japanese Folk Tales’ Evening event that was going to take place the next Friday. Several short parodies of the well known folk tale called Momotaro, which were very funny and joyfully appreciated by the participants.
After this final moment, the participants were free to enjoy the food that the Club offered, then they went home with a little more knowledge about this beautiful country that is Japan.

Calendarul activitatilor- Octombrie 2012

Multi dintre participanti au avut experiente interesante, unii fiind plecati in strainatate, altii ramanand in Cluj.

On 29th of September, since the students started to return to Cluj-Napoca, Japan’s Friends Club restarted its cultural meetings. This time we wanted to welcome the students to Cluj, to find out how everyone spent their summer holidays and we also had 3 guests from Japan: Ms. Abe, Hamamoto Mizue and Ishihara Akiko. Also, Ms. Abe taught us in this meeting how to make nuno zori, a Japanese kind of footwear.
Miss Minodora B. opened the meeting by presenting some dolls made of textile that were donated to the Association by an old friend of the Circle that used to take part at the Saturday evening cultural meetings, Mrs. Ana-Maria B. Although the dolls turned to be part of another Asian nation than Japan, they will certainly find a place in our future exhibitions; her action filled us with gratitude and appreciations. With these thoughts and with the inspiration received we started the meeting as usual, introducing ourselves, and this time we also shared whatever interesting things we had done during the summer. Many of the participants had interesting experiences, some of them having gone abroad, while others remained in Cluj. One way or another, it’s certain that the summer was relaxing for each of us.
Mister Katsutaro Kawai introduced us our guests from Japan who had a few words about their experience in Romania. Ms. Akiko told us that she could feel the kindness and the warm heart of the Romanians and she felt very well. She also told us about an unfortunate experience, having lost her camera during a trip, along with all of her pictures taken in Romania in a few months period. However, she added that most likely she hadn’t lost her camera by chance, but probably God wants to teach her something from it. Ms. Hamamoto, who had been to Romania before, in the fall of 2011, said that she was happy to be here again and to recognize faces among the participants. Ms. Abe, a joyful and sociable person, for the first time in Romania, wanted to teach us how to make Japanese sandals from textile called nuno zori. As a curiosity she told us that lately Japanese started to make more this kind of sandals as the researches proved that they are very healthy because of the pressure made between the thumb and the other 4 fingers.
Before getting down to the workshop part, Mrs Abe told us how she wanted to give a farewell present to all of her 60 workmates, making a pair of nuno zori for each of them, before her retirement and that`s how she improved.
After our Japanese guests told us a few words, given the fact that the workshop was going to be tough, we got started right away. Nuno zori is a kind of footwear made out of used textures, like yukata or futon, with the purpose of  recycling. In a way, it ressembles chirimen dolls, which are made out of kimono cloth scraps. This kind of footwear is made for indoor use, the process involving weaving cloth strips around four thick straps, with the help of a wooden board and some hooks.
Every participant got a board with hooks, three stripes of cloth cut out of old yukata or futon, some straps and other required materials, a needle and a thread. Ms Abe gave instructions during the workshop, with the help of the organizers and the other two Japanese, Ms Hamamoto and Akiko. Even if it took a while and it was a bit tiring, the participants managed, with a little help, to make one of the two nuno zori necessary for a pair. Because one nuno zori took a long time to make, each participant could receive  one of our boards and finish the other pair at home.
At the end of the meeting we enjoyed a little time together, savoring what the organizers prepared for us, along with some cookies brought by one of the participants and some Japanese sweets brought by Ms. Hamamoto from Japan. It was an interesting meeting, for us as organizers, and also for our guests and the participants. We are thankful to every participant who ever came to our meetings and we hope to see everyone again.

), numeralele cardinale,
zilele saptamanii, lunile anului, anotimpurile, cateva intrebari simple („Cati ani ai?”, „Cate obiecte sunt?” etc.) si cateva expresii uzuale („Da.”, „Nu”, „Imi place...”, „Imi cer scuze.” etc.).

Atelierul kirigami a lasat loc mai mult imaginatiei in creatie.

The Summer Program for Children

In the summer of 2011 we realized clearer what the lack of students in Cluj-Napoca means, since students make up most of the participants at the activities and events which we, Japan’s Friends Club, organize at „Sakura” Japanese Teahouse. As a result, in the summer of 2012 we decided to make a change, trying to redirect our summer activities towards the local public. In tackling this we used our experience gained from the collaboration with the David Prodan school, in the past, and from our recent and ongoing collaboration with the Ioan Bob school. Thus, we organized this summer as a summer for children, where the majority of our events were children-oriented, and which called the Summer Program for Children.
We tried to make this program both pleasant and useful, a vital element in working with children, and most of the time even with grown-up people. Therefore, we included in our program Japanese language classes, origami, kirigami, etegami and papercraft workshops, a musical meeting called “Songs for everyone” (Minna no Uta) and one final meeting to congratulate the participants, view pictures from our previous meetings, and at the end of which we watched a Japanese animation, in order to relax.

Te first meeting of the program took place on the 10th of July, and it was a Japanese language class, part of a series of four such classes, where the children had the chance to gain some elementary knowledge of the geographic localization of Japan, about the Japanese language, and since language and culture walk hand in hand in Japan, some basic knowledge about the Japanese culture. The linguistic elements that the children were taught during the Japanese language program included the following: introduction phrases (“My name is...”, “Nice to meet you.”, “Thank you!” etc.), greetings according to different times of day and ocasions (in the morning, in the evening, at departure, at arrival etc.), numbers, weekdays, months, seasons, a few simple questions (“How old are you?”, “How many objects are there?”  etc.) and a few usual expressions (“Yes”, “No”, “I like...”, “I am sorry!” etc.). The children also learned about the existence of the three different alphabets and about the way in which sounds are pronounced in Japanese.
The children showed interest in the elements that were taught, which was expected since they participated at the course because of their curiousity, if not interest in the Japanese language, in the first place. We also made our classes interactive, and the native element, in the person of Ms. Akiko Ishihara, played a very important role in the children’s understanding of the applicability of learning a language like Japanese, and the contexts in which it can be put into practice. With the help of Ms. Ishihara, voluntary during the entire summer program, we also managed to give an example of the Japanese language spoken by a native. Besides the practical aspect of the presence of Ms. Ishihara, the children were happy about the presence of the Japanese at the courses and some affective ties were also made between her and the children. We regard this with pleasure, since our purpose, as Japan’s Friends Club, is that of always creating a warm, familiar environment for anyone who wishes to enjoy our activities, and also make friends, something we can be proud of achieving.

The origami, kirigami, etegami and papercraft workshops were probably the most anticipated activities, due to the fact that these activities are more interactive and have a more colorful nature. The main idea of these workshops was not to give a concrete direction to the children in order to create something as close to perfection as possible. Also, this time our purpose was not to observe various lacks in skills, which to correct afterwards, like inappropriate paper folding or cutting techniques, or inadequate use of brushes and cutting tools, and so on, even though our intervenience was necessary in some cases. More than this, we wanted to give children the freedom of creative expression, to extend the boundaries of imagination as far as possible, stimulating them with discussions, examples of other artistic creations by children or artists, and with this, to discover the artistic potential of every children, and learn together what art has to pull out of each of us. We let the art flow, while we, the organizers, found out some very interesting things from the children; we found out that the difference between school and home is that at school there are no beds, that the leppard is similar to a giraffe because both have spots, that an athlete is an artist and that we can create pretty much everything out of paper. These are only a few of the many interesting things we found out while the children were painting, drawing and cutting.

The children felt at home in our Japanese teahouse and we all enjoyed each other’s creations. At the origami workshop we folded jumping horses, butterflies  and chopstick envelopes. Since the art of inventing origami models is very difficult, at the origami workshop just discussing other possible models was fulfiling enough, getting to the conclusion that even a habitable house made of paper would not be impossible to create.
The kirigami workshop however, was more generous in terms of expression of ingenuity. After we created the models proposed by us, we gave the children the possibility to further create their own models. The results were just amazing, the children showing great imagination, both in creating and interpreting the meaning of the models.
Maybe the most spectacular of all of the workshops was the etegami workshop, where we painted postcards in Japanese style. All of the participants showed great potential in terms of creativity and originality, the resulting postcards being stunning. During the whole workshop we didn’t cease to feel good and to have unexpectedly grown-up debates and conversations with the children.
The papercraft workshop was as rewarding as it was demanding. Our aim at this workshop was to create a children’s city, out of paper, cut and glued together. It was indeed hard to get it done, but in the end we managed to, the finalized little city turning out quite impressive.
Minna no uta, translated as  Songs for everyone, was a both interesting and educative meeting. The children watched a series of musical cartoons, for children. We watched a movie that teached us to brush our teeth and listen to our parents, another one talked about a girl and a boy, who used to play together. However, one day the boy became sad because his mother left for a few days. Another song brought us into the past, by means of visiting a museum, a real gateway to the past. The last cartoon taught us to appreciate and respect our grandparents, who help us with our homeworks and who are so skilled at so many things, due to the experience they gathered all of their long lives. At the end we learned how to sing the song that was talking about The Computer Granny – Konpyuta Obachan. The children gave their best to learn the song, which they liked a lot.
The last meeting of the program took place on August 31st, and it was the day when we congratulated the children for the success of the program, handed diplomas and prizes, took pictures together, and in the end we watched the movie Tonari no Totoro – My Neighbour Totoro, an animation who was appreciated both by the children and the parents who were present at the meeting.
We believe that it is very important to look for new valences in children, so that we can offer support and guidance in the direction that the child is in need of, and especially not to get in the way of their development by being ignorant, so that in the future they can become inquisitive teenagers and, one day, admirable grown-ups. As an organization and as people, we do all that we can to offer an environment devoid of any behavioral pollution, omnipresent in the actual society, especially among teenagers, who getting increasingly cultivated in inculture and are caracterised by a lack of moral values. It is a pseudosociety floating around on the reminiscences of a one day promising society, which is now, however, in a continuous decadence. The Japanese society isn’t by far perfect, nevertheless, as people capable of making judgements and seclude bad from good, by means of counsciousness, we can find in this distant civilization, and also in the immediate vicinity, numerous human, estetic or cultural values, which to promote and adopt in our personal lives.
We are happy with the results of our summer program for children and we hope that in the future more children will be able to enjoy what we have to offer, and more than that, we wish that more people realized the need of not one, but of many revitalization centres, for the society, the culture of our people and last but not least, for the revitalization of each of us, personally.
We are grateful to our participants amd we hope to see them again at our activities, as soon as possible.
